We’re excited to announce the open call for the Art Exchange: Moving Image programme, a collaborative and cross-cultural curatorial professional development and exhibition programme for early to mid-career visual arts curators from Sub-Saharan Africa working with moving image. The programme is supported by the British Council and organised by LUX, the UK agency for the support and promotion of artists working with moving image, Yinka Shonibare Foundation and Guest Artists Space (G.A.S.) Foundation, Nigeria.
Selected participants will receive mentoring support from LUX and G.A.S., and a dedicated programme of professional development and networking opportunities. These activities will be delivered alongside a fully-funded research trip to the UK in Autumn 2023, an opportunity to work with moving image works in the British Council visual arts collection as well as logistical and financial support to stage a final exhibition. Selected participants will also receive a curatorial fee and their host venue will receive funding for the exhibition staging.
ELIGIBILITY
The programme is open to early to mid-career visual arts curators based in Ethiopia, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe who are able to commit to:

A monthly online workshop series with LUX and G.A.S. from September 2023

Travel to the UK for one week in Autumn 2023

Delivering an exhibition programme in their home country from late 2023 onwards.
We expect to offer up to 6 places and applicants must:

Have a proven track record of curatorial activity in the visual arts field

Have an interest in working with moving image
-
Be proficient in speaking/writing in English.
APPLICATIONS

Send a CV/resume outlining their relevant experience

Send a letter of support from a venue/organisation who will host the proposed final project in the curator’s home country

Submit a short curatorial proposal of no more than 2 sides of A4.
The curatorial proposal can be indicative at this stage and it is expected that it will develop and change as the programme progresses. The final project must include moving image works from the British Council collection and successful applicants will be given remote access to the works during the development stage.
In terms of project themes, curators should respond to one or more of the British Council focuses which currently are: climate change; living together: accepting the differences of others, inclusion, identity, gender and race equality; nationhood – who we are?; health and wellbeing; open societies (democracy/ agency/equality); women and girls; youth and young people; cities.
