On the morning of April 24th, Y.S.F. and G.A.S. Patrons gathered for a special breakfast and guided tour of throwers, the first UK solo exhibition by Johannesburg-based artist and two-time G.A.S. Foundation alumnus, Nolan Oswald Dennis. Generously hosted by Gasworks, the event opened with welcoming remarks from Director Robert Leckie, followed by an introduction to Nolan’s practice led by curator Rosa Tyhurst in conversation with the artist.
Nolan led the group through the exhibition, which investigates the entanglements of cosmology, geology, and political history through large-scale murals, diagrammatic works, and a 3D-printed installation. A focal point of the exhibition is recurse 4 a late planet, an expansive wall mural mapping the trajectories of near-Earth asteroids as a speculative framework for thinking planetary precarity. The exhibition challenges extractive worldviews and proposes new models of Black planetary thought. The exhibition's ongoing programme will be accompanied by the Black Earth Study Club, a public programme convened by Imani Mason Jordan, with events on the 15th and 22nd May 2025. throwers remains on view at Gasworks until the 22nd of June, 2025.
