On 26th February we were finally able to unveil our new building in Lagos, a modern concrete structure that fuses brutalist sensibilities with traditional Yoruba architectural principles. The space was designed by Ghanaian British architect Elsie Owusu in collaboration with Lagos based Nigerian architect Nihinlola Shonibare of NS Design Consult, who were additionally commissioned to execute the interior design concept and delivery. It comes equipped with three live/work units and an adaptable multi-use project/gallery/studio space and will be ready to welcome its first residents in Spring 2022.
Our guests had the chance to explore some of the building’s floors whilst enjoying an exhibition of works acquired by Yinka Shonibare CBE RA over the last 20 years. The installation of photographs, sculpture, paintings, works on paper, and mixed media collage, curated by G.A.S. Director Temitayo Ogunbiyi, encouraged people to navigate the space whilst considering contemporary art in conversation with works from Nigerian modernism and antiquity.
The highlight of the day was a discussion between Yinka Shonibare CBE RA and Creative Director of CCA Lagos Oyindamola Fakeye. Our speakers began the session by reflecting on the immeasurable contribution made to the arts by the late Bisi Silva before discussing the exciting future of Nigeria’s burgeoning cultural ecosystem.
