Event:The Cyanotype Studio

A Hands-On Cyanotype Printing Workshop and Open Studio Led by adeoluwa oluwajoba

Lagos-based mixed-media artist Adeoluwa Oluwajoba, whose practice examines image transfer and reproduction through layered visual fragments of bodies and landscapes, recently concluded a four-week residency at G.A.S. Lagos. During his time, he focused on advancing his cyanotype experiments on fabric. Alongside this, he continued developing Alice in a Daydream, an ongoing body of work that considers the complexities of navigating individual and collective presence within public space in Lagos.

As his residency concluded, adeoluwa hosted The Cyanotype Studio on 2 April 2026 at G.A.S. Lagos, bringing together participants for a two-part programme comprising a hands-on workshop and an open studio presentation. The event offered an opportunity to engage directly with his process while opening up conversations around alternative photographic practices.

The workshop began with an introduction to cyanotype as both a photographic technique and an expanded drawing tool within his practice. adeoluwa guided participants through the materials and processes involved, beginning with the preparation of cyanotype solution and the coating of paper. He demonstrated how digital images can be converted into negatives using accessible software, translating photographic material into a form suitable for exposure. These negatives were then placed onto treated surfaces, secured with glass, and exposed to sunlight. The exposed works were later washed in water mixed with vinegar, fixing the images and revealing the process’s blue tones.

Building on this, participants engaged in a second exercise using hand-drawn negatives. Through drawing, they translated gestures and lines directly onto tracing paper, which were then transferred onto coated surfaces and exposed in the same manner.

Following the workshop, adeoluwa led visitors through an open studio presentation of Alice in a Daydream. The display brought together a selection of mixed-media and cyanotype works produced both prior to and during the residency. Attendees were invited to take a closer look at the work and ask questions to learn more about his ideas.

About adeoluwa oluwajoba

adeoluwa oluwajoba is a mixed media artist whose work combines painting, collage, and image-transfer processes to create layered compositions of bodies and landscapes. His practice explores the mechanics of image reproduction—from painted surfaces to photographic printmaking—as a way of examining how meaning is constructed through visual fragments. oluwajoba’s recent work focuses on the dynamic relationship between human bodies and the spaces they occupy, particularly the tension between private intimacy and public life in Lagos.
